Fred faces the consequences of his foolish actions

Fred (John Savident) is thunderstruck at his own folly in gambling the shop away and has no idea how he is going to break the news to Ashley (Steven Arnold). Mike (Johnny Briggs) meanwhile is enjoying lording it over his old adversary and even starts making plans to change around the shop. Bemused Ashley (Steven Arnold) hasn't a clue what is going on but it can only be a matter of time before Fred has to come clean about gambling away his inheritance.

Jack (William Tarmey) is on a roll with his pigeon scam but Liz (Beverley Callard) breaks the news to Vera (Elizabeth Dawn) about Henry's real identity. Deciding to play Jack at his own game, Vera hatches a plan to get her own back on her devious spouse.

Katy (Lucy-Jo Hudson) is still keen for her and Martin (Sean Wilson) to start a family and even quizzes an amused Tracy (Kate Ford) about the pros and cons of having a baby. Even Tracy's horror stories about sleepless nights don't put her off and she tells Claire (Julia Haworth) that she knows it's what Martin wants deep down too.

At the Barlows’, Ken (William Roache) has reached the end of his tether with Wanda (Ann Rye) but it seems there is no sign of her moving out until her house is ready and Ken will have to put up with her unwanted attentions.

Maria gets taken for a ride

Maria (Samia Ghadie) is excited about seeing Dave (Michael Imerson), but first she has to explain to Tyrone (Alan Halsall) why she can't go to the football club dance with him. Tyrone is onto her though and tells her it's over, leaving Maria free to enjoy rekindling her holiday romance with Dave. It seems Dave might not be all she thought, and when he arrives with no cash for the night out and a story about leaving his wallet on the train, Maria finds herself delving into Audrey's (Sue Nicholls) petty cash to fund the night's entertainment. When she arrives home alone, she confesses to Liz (Beverley Callard) that she has made a complete fool of herself again.

Ashley (Steven Arnold) and Claire (Julia Haworth) are in shock over the discovery that Mike (Johnny Briggs) is now the owner of the butcher’s. Ashley decides to plead with Mike but to no avail and it is with heavy heart that Fred (John Savident) and Ashley draw up a contract of ownership for Mike. Is this the end of an era for father and son?

Jack (William Tarmey) is nervous about Vera's (Elizabeth Dawn) invitation to Henry/Ron (Gordon Langford-Rowe) but hopes they can still pull off the scam. When Vera serves them a very interesting dish for dinner however, it soon becomes clear that she has rumbled them – and Jack needs to find a new home for his pigeons. He finds help forthcoming from a rather surprising quarter.

At the Barlows’, Ken (William Roache) is alarmed to discover that Wanda (Ann Rye) has plans to spend Christmas with them.
