With the worry of Fred’s (John Savident) recent folly now fading, wedding talk once again fills the air at Number 4 as the planning for Ashley (Steven Arnold) and Claire’s (Julia Howarth) Christmas Day ceremony resumes. The excited bride-to-be pays Audrey (Sue Nicholls) a visit to discuss the perfect coiffure for her big day. Meanwhile, Ashley and Fred tackle the meatier issue of catering for the post-church bash. It soon becomes clear that the pair have differing views when it comes to the number of festive birds to be served. All this talk of turkey puts Fred in a seasonal mood and with pleasing grandson Joshua (Benjamin Beresford) in mind, he arranges a shocking shop-front Santa display that gives hapless assistant Boris (Mark Hallett) a big headache. However, the frivolous mood is broken by the surprise arrival of Claire’s stern tax inspector mother, Yvonne (Yvonne O‘Grady), who makes it clear that it is not a social call. Elsewhere, Maria (Samia Ghadie) is grateful for Tyrone’s (Alan Halsall) financial help in getting her out of the sticky situation with Audrey (Sue Nicholls). All she’s got to do now is replace the money without Audrey noticing and nobody will be any the wiser. Candice (Nikki Sanderson) reluctantly agrees to distract their boss long enough for Maria to sneak into the back room, which she does successfully. However, a suspicious Audrey spots the fresh crisp notes and thinking Candice has been borrowing from the petty cash to fund her lavish new lifestyle, confides her fears in a guilty Maria. Will Danny’s decorative design spread the message of “Goodwill to all men” or only serve to put the girls’ noses out of joint? Tracy (Kate Ford) lies to Steve (Simon Gregson), telling him Amy (Rebecca Pike) has started to say the word "dada" and Roy (David Neilson) begins to prepare his Christmas pudding competition for the café. Ashley (Steven Arnold) and Fred (John Savident) are stunned as Claire’s mum Yvonne (Yvonne O’Grady) begins her tax inspection. An angry Claire (Julia Haworth) accuses her mother of having a personal vendetta against all of them hence this sudden interest in Fred’s financial dealings. Ashley comforts Claire when she gets upset over her mother’s latest actions, believing everything will be ok as he is confident Fred’s books should all be in order. Fred, however is desperately trying to contact his accountant, confiding in Ashley that there may have been some underhand dealing to cover the money he lost in the Thai bride fiasco earlier in the year. As Yvonne continues to pore over Fred’s books, will she uncover Fred’s monetary misdemeanours and for how long will Ashley be able to keep his cool with his vindictive future mother-in-law? Elsewhere, Audrey (Sue Nicholls) decides it’s time to confront Candice (Nikki Sanderson) over borrowing from the salon’s petty cash. As she begins to chastise an innocent Candice, Maria (Samia Ghadie) guiltily breaks down and comes clean to a stunned Audrey, telling her the full sordid tale. With her conscience eased and Audrey placated, Maria arranges to meet Tyrone (Alan Halsall) to thank him for his help. He is heartened by Maria’s friendly demeanour, and, as the pair sit chatting, he plans to summon up the courage to ask her out. Will a nervous Tyrone go through with his plans or will he lose his bottle at the last moment? Meanwhile, over at Underworld, boss Danny (Bradley Walsh) organises a grand switch - on of the Christmas lights – even inviting the local paper over to record the event. But with the girls upset at Danny’s scantily-clad Santa’s helper, they plan their own surprise. Angela (Kathryn Hunt) and the other girls arrange a surprise addition to the display that is sure to wipe the smile off their smug boss’s face. At the Barlows’, Tracy (Kate Ford) is thrilled when Steve (Simon Gregson) presents her with a Christmas gift for daughter Amy (Rebecca Pike). Steve is cautious, advising Tracy that Karen (Suranne Jones) must not find out about his generosity. Later as Tracy places Amy’s present under the tree, Deirdre (Anne Kirkbride) is concerned that her daughter is once again building up her hopes too much over something that will never happen between her and Steve. If Steve (Simon Gregson) thought Karen’s (Suranne Jones) pregnancy was going to have a calming effect on her, he’d better think again. Suffering from morning sickness, she’s in a foul mood. The situation isn’t helped when she overhears Liz (Beverley Callard) and Steve discussing the present he bought for Amy (Rebecca Pike). Karen explodes; yet again Steve has gone behind her back, she’s sick and tired of the current situation and Steve’s latest actions only strengthen Karen’s desire to sell the car they jointly own with the Barlow family. Over a drink in the Rovers the two warring sides discuss their options. Ken (William Roache), tired of all the trouble the prize car has caused, reluctantly agrees with Karen that they should cut their losses and get rid of the troublesome motor. Tracy (Kate Ford) meanwhile has not been party to these discussions and upon hearing of the decision, digs in her heels; she’s not going to let Karen have her way – whatever the cost, the car stays. As Steve drags away a fuming Karen, it’s clear Tracy may have won out in this skirmish but the war is far from over. Elsewhere, Maria (Samia Ghadie) feels uncomfortable owing Tyrone (Alan Halsall) the money he so kindly lent her in order to pay back Audrey (Sue Nicholls). She arranges to borrow the money back from her understanding employer and pays off her debt to Tyrone. Feeling guilty over her recent treatment of the besotted mechanic, she offers the hand of friendship by inviting him to her flat for a fancy meal tomorrow night. Seeing a glimmer of hope, Tyrone readily accepts the offer. Is he once again building his hopes up for a reconciliation between him and his ex-fiancée? Meanwhile, Claire’s mother Yvonne (Yvonne O’Grady) continues to make her presence felt by carrying on her inspection of Fred’s (John Savident) books. The butcher’s glum mood is lifted however when Claire (Julia Haworth) asks him to give her away at her forthcoming nuptials. Claire explains that with her own mother refusing to attend the ceremony, she can think of no one better upon which to bestow the honour. An emotional Fred is delighted to accept the kind offer but his happiness is short-lived when a steely Yvonne arrives in the Rovers to tell him she has finished her inspection at the butcher’s shop and is returning in the morning to begin her investigation into the Rovers financial dealings. It’s clear to all that she will stop at nothing to find the chink in Fred’s financial armour. As Shelley (Sally Lindsay) looks forward to spending her first Christmas together with Charlie (Bill Ward), she reluctantly informs him that she is will be spending tomorrow afternoon away from him at a brewery function. Charlie is suspicious as Shelley hadn’t previously mentioned the engagement. His concern is raised when he secretly phones the brewery and is shocked to hear that no such bash has been organised. He keeps this information to himself and later broaches the subject with Shelley, expressing his concerns that he cannot attend the party with her. A defensive Shelley backs down, saying that if Charlie doesn’t want her to go then she’ll cancel her arrangements. This seems to be the end of the matter but Charlie later raises the subject again and, intrigued by what Shelley is really planning, says if she wants to go he’d be happy for her to attend. It’s clear Charlie suspects Shelley is up to something; he just doesn’t know what and he intends to find out exactly what his usually truthful girlfriend is hiding from him. Tyrone (Alan Halsall) is excited at the prospect of spending the
evening alone with Maria (Samia Ghadie), even buying a new shirt
to mark the occasion. It’s clear he’s wants to use this
opportunity as a way of revealing his true feelings for her. Knowing
how he feels, Vera (Elizabeth Dawn) warns him to be careful , she
doesn’t want to see Maria hurt him again. After a couple of
glasses of wine for Dutch courage he begins to unburden himself to
Maria but before she has time to let him down gently, they are disturbed
by a surprise visitor. Dave Bellis (Michael Imerson), the subject
of Maria’s recent holiday romance, has turned up at her flat
to repay the money he owes her and to give their relationship another
chance. Meanwhile, the car wars continue when Karen (Suranne Jones) asks Ken (William Roache) for her own set of keys to their jointly owned vehicle. Ken, wishing to defuse their recent animosity, gives in to Karen’s demand and watches as the newly pregnant machinist disappears off for a drive. Tracy (Kate Ford) is incredulous that her father has given her enemy access to the car but her anger quickly turns to despair when Karen returns and shows off the new accessory she has had fitted to the windscreen of the much fought over motor. Karen’s latest actions spell out clearly to Tracy that Mr and Mrs McDonald are very much a couple.
