Episode 5661 - Sunday 4 January 2004 at
7:30pm Fiz worries about whether her mother will spill the beans to Kirk about the night she spent with Tyrone. She challenges Cilla, who offers Fiz a deal - if Fiz agrees to babysit Chesney for a while she will keep quiet. An incredulous Fiz declines the offer. Will devious Cilla wreck her own daughter’s relationship and risk further ructions? Sarah is shocked after hearing that Brenda has told Bethany that Todd and Sarah will no longer love her when the new baby arrives. This is the last straw for the exasperated young mum and together with Todd they confront Brenda and ban her from ever seeing Bethany again. Will barmy Brenda heed their words or is she set to cause more problems for the young couple? Meanwhile, Tracy’s attempts to persuade Blanche to leave Number 7 and return to Ken and Deirdre’s fall on deaf ears. After only one night sharing her new house Tracy is already fed- up of her interfering grandmother. How long can the odd couple keep up this strange domestic arrangement?
With Sarah and Todd’s harsh words still ringing in her ears Brenda returns to Coronation Street in an attempt to smooth things over. Sarah is not swayed and once again tells Brenda to stay away. Upset, Brenda leaves but later calls in to see Bethany at her nursery. A scheming Brenda tricks the nursery assistant into believing she is taking Bethany to the dentist. A distraught Sarah panics when she discovers Bethany has been taken. What plans does Brenda have in store for her unsuspecting granddaughter? Elsewhere, Fiz admits to Kirk that she did spend the night at Tyrone’s but that it was all innocent and she slept on the sofa. When Fiz once again challenges Cilla to tell Kirk the truth she refuses to listen. Later a downbeat Fiz confides in Janice that her mother always has enjoyed stirring up trouble. Meanwhile, Jack goes to desperate measures in order to raise the money needed to pay Charlie off to complete the Duckworth’s extension. When he sells their new fridge to fund their building work he’s bound to receive a frosty reception from Vera.
As Todd and Sarah panic they decide to call round to Brenda ‘s house. With no sign of life they decide to break in. Once inside they see pictures of Bethany placed next to those of her late father, Neil. This frightens Sarah and they return to the street to enlist Emily and Norris’s help in tracking Brenda down. Meanwhile, Brenda has taken Bethany to her church saying that they can once again be reunited with Neil. She leads the little girl to the top of the bell tower. Can she be stopped before she takes herself and little Bethany on a tragic leap of faith? Meanwhile, Les goads Kirk into challenging Tyrone to a fight. Les stirs things up saying that Kirk is bringing shame on the household allowing Tyrone to get away with sleeping with Fiz behind Kirk’s back. Tyrone, in the meantime, has other things to worry about as Vera informs him she has pawned her engagement ring to bring in extra funds for their building work.

Can she be talked down or will the disturbed grandmother go through with her plan to be reunited with her dead son? Elsewhere, Ken is furious when Deirdre fails to return from work. He has prepared a surprise meal and is angry when he finds her in the Rovers talking to builder Charlie. Is Charlie causing Ken to suffer from a case of the green–eyed monster? Sarah is shocked to see her – but there are more surprises in store when Todd arrives home and pops the question. Deirdre and Ken are enjoying life on their own at Number One but Blanche is not about to make life easy for them. Meanwhile, Ken wants Deirdre to sort out the problem with the asbestos and when a flirty Charlie agrees to move it just for her she finds herself lying to Ken about how she solved the problem. Rita is worried that takings are down at the Kabin and is pretty sure that the problem is down to Chesney and his mates helping themselves to the stock. She wants to deal with it her own way but Norris is concerned that she is not being hard enough on them. Elsewhere, Harry discovers that Sally’s old shop is still empty and approaches Emily with a business plan. |

Rita decides to declare war on the young hooligans who are terrorising her in the shop. Things go from bad to worse when Chesney steals some sweets to try and impress Bradley and Norris suggests that they should only allow two children in at a time. But the date quickly progresses when Charlie reveals he lives nearby and the couple sneak off for some afternoon fun and frolics. Elsewhere, Cilla steps up her campaign to frame Rita. She’s careful to cover every angle and after informing the school about Chesney’s injuries she decides it’s time to go to the police. She runs through the story with Chesney one more time before reporting the attack and when a stunned Rita is carted off to the station for questioning Cilla looks smug. Is Rita about to be arrested or will the police see through Cilla’s scam? Back on the street Dev and Maya are still arguing over the stolen vase but when Maya suggests taking it back to the shop Dev is forced to admit that it’s too risky. In a moment of spontaneity Maya then gives the vase to Todd as an engagement present and both Dev and Maya are pleased to have rid of it until they spot a police car arriving on the street. Has it come for Maya?
Cilla’s brought back down to earth when she goes to visit a solicitor. Despite a winning performance by Chesney the solicitor tells her that as there were no witnesses to the attack, and it’s only Chesney’s word against Rita’s, they’re unlikely to get much more than £500.
