Wednesday 1 September 7.30 - 8pm ITV1. Karen’s emotions finally get the better of her as she goes AWOL. It’s the morning after the night before and a hung-over Karen (Suranne Jones) awakes to find a concerned Steve (Simon Gregson) saying she should take a day off work. She has also received a very much unwanted sympathy card and sarcastically says it was when her mum was alive she needed sympathy, not now. She heads off to work but becomes frustrated when her pals constantly enquire about her feelings. Janice (Vicky Entwistle) however, is concerned when Karen fails to show in the Rovers for a lunchtime drink and enlists Steve’s help to track her down He begins to panic when he is unable to ascertain his wife’s whereabouts. Have recent events become too much for Karen? Has she finally cracked? In the meantime, Tracy (Kate Ford) lets herself into Ciaran’s (Keith Duffy) flat to find that he is trying out recipes for his new restaurant. He is confident that the bank will approve his request for a loan. A call later dashes all his dreams as they reject his request saying that they cannot lend him that much money. A badly-timed entrance from Charlie (Bill Ward) leads to Ciaran having to pretend he is able give Charlie a cheque for things he has already bought for the restaurant. Ciaran confides in Tracy that the bank have rejected him, and they need a plan B. But she says asking the bank for a loan was plan B. Will Tracy come up with a better idea to get Ciaran out of this sticky situation? Dev (Jimmi Harkishin) and Sunita (Shobna Gulati) set off to the register office to book their wedding. Little do they know that whilst they are basking in the happiness at the prospect of their up and coming nuptials, Maya (Sasha Behar) is planning an unpleasant surprise. Armed with Sunita’s stolen birth certificate, she sets about putting her plan into action. Just what does Maya have in store for the happy couple? Has the pressure of her mother’s death finally got too much for Karen? Liz (Beverley Callard) is alarmed to find the front door to the McDonalds’ flat wide open, and rushes upstairs to see what is going on. Steve (Simon Gregson) awakes to find that his nightmare of Karen (Suranne Jones) disappearing is actually real. He left the door open hoping Karen would return, but Liz is quick to call her a selfish cow. Steve defends his wife and is clearly fraught with worry. Liz can see this and for once is stuck for words when Steve announces that Karen would never leave her mobile at home, and has. Persuading Eileen (Sue Cleaver) to cover for him at work, he reports Karen missing to the police. Eileen tries to reassure him that she is probably shopping but can see how worried he is. The police tell Steve he is overreacting and to give her a bit more time. Frantic Steve searches for his missing wife, but returns to the Street having been unable to track her down. Will Karen return home and if so, when? In a bid to make amends with Chesney (Sam Aston) following their recent neglect, Les (Bruce Jones)and Cilla (Wendi Peters) tell a present is waiting outside; as a quad bike is revealed, he thinks all his Christmases have come at once. He is overjoyed when told he can spend the whole day with Tommy (Thomas Craig) and Kevin (Michael Le Vell) in the garage learning how to service his new gift. Les is annoyed at Cilla for taking all the credit for Chesney’s bike when it was he who paid for it. Cilla shrugs it off and calls him petty. Will Cilla ever change? Meanwhile, Ciaran (Keith Duffy) has been trying to raise some extra cash for his project without much success. His culinary skills are put to the test, when Betty (Betty Driver) is unable to work and Fred (John Savident) asks him to cook the Rovers lunches. His creations are a resounding success and with the restaurant plans in jeopardy it is Tracy (Kate Ford) who hatches a plan that might just save his bacon.
